Varithena Q & A

What is Varithena?

Varithena is an FDA-approved injectable microfoam that treats varicose veins and their underlying causes.

The Vascular Surgery Associates Medical Group specialists administer Varithena treatments in the office as a nonsurgical procedure — no incisions or major anesthesia needed. Varithena is virtually painless.

How does the Varithena process work?

For a Varithena treatment, you'll lay on the treatment table as your doctor applies topical anesthetic or injects a local anesthetic using a thin needle.

After you’re numb, your doctor uses ultrasound guidance to precisely inject the foam into your varicose vein. One or two quick needle sticks deliver sufficient foam.

The foam expands to fill the diseased vein, which severely irritates it and leads to vein collapse. Your body’s normal waste elimination processes flush both the foam and the vein tissue out harmlessly over time.

The blood moves into other veins in the surrounding area. The treatment usually takes less than one hour in the Vascular Surgery Associates Medical Group office.

Am I a good candidate for Varithena?

You could be a candidate for Varithena treatment if you have varicose veins with:

  • Leg heaviness
  • Aching legs
  • Throbbing legs
  • Itchy legs
  • Leg swelling
  • Bulging veins

Most people wanting to treat varicose veins using minimally invasive approaches are good candidates for Varithena. However, certain circumstances, like pregnancy, can disqualify you from receiving the treatment at this time.

How many Varithena treatments will I need?

Most people require just one Varithena treatment; however, you may need a follow-up treatment, if you have multiple varicose veins or large veins.

What happens after Varithena treatment?

After your Varithena treatment, Vascular Surgery Associates Medical Group gives you specific recovery guidelines. You can typically resume normal activities that same day, but you should avoid strenuous exercise for seven days.

You'll wear bandages for two days after treatment and then compression stockings for two weeks. Walking is an important part of your recovery. Aim for 10-minute or longer walks every day for a month, and avoid prolonged sitting.

Varithena is a cutting-edge treatment for varicose veins that requires no downtime. To find out how this treatment can help you, call Vascular Surgery Associates Medical Group or schedule a consultation online today.
